Within the heart of Tokyo, CARBONDALE was commissioned to design 2 rooftop penthouse apartments in the Aoyama district as second residences.

The first pied-à-terre is conceived as “a house in the country…in the city”. The interior living space is unified with the expansive exterior rooftop terrace by removing and glazing the separating wall and extending the interior vegetal ceiling canopy to the exterior as a vegetal trellis.

Typically Japanese homes are private and off-limits to visitors. Our second apartment is designed as “a home for a collector” showcasing the inhabitant’s collection of objects to visitors and guests by implementing an undulating black lacquer display wall that unites and personalizes the interior and exterior living areas.
