To fit the unique lifestyle of a forestry industrialist, CARBONDALE designed all the furniture for his Aoyama, Tokyo residence. Rather than follow the western model of creating floating furniture objects within a rectangular box, traditional Japanese dwellings where the furniture is indivisible from the walls and floor surfaces inspired the design direction. Transforming the Clients timber from a soft Radiata Pine to a virtual “hardwood” through an innovative compression technique, 24 pieces of furniture are extruded from the floor plane and specifically shaped to the Clients body contours to produce a truly custom design.
