The seemingly classic limestone clad stair is rendered illusionary by moving images that seems to permeate from beneath the stone surface and dances down the stair risers and onto the stone flooring below. The installation created by Eric Carlson and Aurelio Clementi is an extraordinary work of art created uniquely for the LV Roppongi store in Tokyo.
It was realized with an unprecedented technique whereby the limestone is micro-perforated by a combination of drilling and high velocity water-jet in an 8-millimeter grid. Each of the more than 400,000 perforations are then threaded with fibre-optics filaments that are coalesced and grouped together to receive the projected video images that mystifyingly appear and disappear from the invisible pores on the surface of the stone.
